Peaceful Warriors: violence prevention through dance and martial arts, games & role-plays (all ages)

This fun, highly interactive workshop will introduce participants to Destiny's 5 Fingers of Violence Prevention curriculum and its application in school and other community settings. The curriculum includes exercises that teach skills crucial to the safety of students who are more and more likely to encounter conflict situations that could result in deadly violence. The exercises, games and role-plays give students tools in awareness, verbal conflict resolution, and basic physical self-defense skills. The curriculum also includes basic dance and martial arts warm-ups and combinations as a fun foundation for introducing complex concepts and their applications in "real-life" situations. The curriculum gives youth the tools to choose courage and creativity to resolve conflicts peacefully and ultimately to create a safer, more peaceful world.

Real Talk/Real Moves: violence prevention for teens and young adults

In this workshop we use Destiny Arts Center's teen violence prevention model, Real Talk/Real Moves, which builds and expands on the 5 Fingers of Violence Prevention curriculum by making it more relevant to the lives of teens and young adults. Through dance and basic self-defense practice, theater games and role-plays, and lively discussion that touches on real issues effecting young people, the workshop provides a safe place, practical skills and an outlet for creative expression. In the end participants will walk away with new ideas about how to stay aware and safe which will help them to continue to grow throughout their lives. This workshop will be a lot of fun, so come with an open mind, an open heart and willingness to try new things.

The ABC’s of Anger : creative conflict resolution (all ages)

The ABC’s of Anger utilizes group activities and role-plays to teach students a specific anger management method. The workshop starts from the premise that anger is not a bad emotion. Students identify situations that cause anger in their lives and, through a group process, learn to discern appropriate responses to these situations. Ultimately the ABC method gives youth a tool that can help them achieve the outcomes they want in their lives.

Self-Defense (all ages)

This workshop uses Destiny Arts Center’s 5 Fingers of Violence Prevention to teach critical self-defense techniques. Students will develop awareness and confidence that can aid them in potentially dangerous situations and in their everyday lives. They will learn the signs of threatening situations, how to avoid them once they’ve been identified and how and when to apply their self-defense skills if they need to.

Self-Defense for Girls (7-18 year olds)

This workshop covers the same material as the self-defense workshop and takes it a step further addressing situations specific to girls. Topics include developing an assertive voice, awareness of possible sexual predators, kidnapping and communication skills.

Moving in the Movement: using dance & theater as Tools for social change (teens and adults)

The performing arts are powerful tools for social change. The creation and performance of socially relevant movement/theater pieces inspire and educate both performers and audiences. In this workshop participants will be guided towards exploring relevant social issues through movement, theater games and exercises. The workshop can also be focused towards creation of performance pieces around themes chosen by the group. Come prepared to move your body, speak your truth, and act from the heart.

Dance Basics: hip-hop, modern, African & Latin dance (all ages)

Destiny Arts Center has been at the forefront of youth dance, theater andperformance in the East Bay for over twenty years. This workshop will enable students to learn a specific dance style with an experienced Destiny instructor. Classes are geared to beginners but will challenge those with experience as well. Residencies can combine more than one dance form over the course of two or more classes.

Martial Arts Basics: kung fu, karate & capoeira (all ages)

Martial arts help instill discipline, mental focus and physical development in the lives of young people. This workshop will enable students to study one of three martial art forms with a trained Destiny instructor. Classes will include physicalexercises, historical overview and philosophical perspectives. The capoeira workshop also includes an introduction to capoeira instruments and call and response songs.

Hip-Hop and Beyond: the African roots of hip-hop(7-adult)

This class explores dance from Africa and the African Diaspora through the lens of contemporary hip-hop. Dance forms may include: West African dance; capoeira; salsa/Latin; dancehall & hip-hop. We recommend a four-class minimum for this residency. Three dance forms will be taught including hip-hop and two other forms, which may vary according to availability and interest. The culminating event will highlight the dance forms that the students studied during the residency and a brief oral presentation on dance and expression in the African Diaspora.

Theater for the People : theater games and exercises that explore the nature of life (7-adult)

Theater games help open lines of communication and create a forum for honest expression for young people. This workshop will enable youth to grapple with their thoughts, issues and dreams while nurturing their creative side. A theater company becomes a support network through which people can express themselves freely without fear of judgment or condemnation. This workshop will create this same environment in a microcosm. Once this foundation is laid, participants will be able to explore the deeper issues that affect their lives.

Yoga (all ages)

The ancient art/science of yoga combines various physical postures with conscious breathing. Yoga brings flexibility, strength and deep relaxation to the body and mind. Friday Yoga is a popular class for teachers or community organizations.
