Classes & Camps

After school, weekend and summer programs for children and teens at Destiny’s North Oakland center provide skills training in dance, martial arts and performance, as well as tools for confidence, leadership and expression through our esteemed violence prevention curriculum.

At Destiny, caring adult mentors coupled with an inclusive, multi-cultural community, and an innovative curriculum make our programs more than something to do, more than a place to go. Destiny gives young people a way to be.

Please refer to our Fees & Registration page for information on how to sign a student up for classes or camps.

MARTIAL ARTS

Youth & Teen Martial Arts
Destiny’s legacy is rooted in martial arts training for young people. The foundation for our martial arts program is a traditional belt system through which we teach Kajukenbo, an ecclectic martial arts style emphasizing effective skills for self-defense within the framework of graceful and powerful movement. Students study the martial arts forms, sparring and grappling techniques, and work to master the physical discipline itself. But students also learn to use the beauty and embodied philosophy of the martial arts to grow into “peaceful warriors,” expressive agents for peace who are skilled in physical technique and the art of respectful competition, and who animate their relationships with the principles of Destiny’s Warrior’s Code: Love, Respect, Care, Responsibility, Honor and Peace.

Required uniform: white martial arts gi

OFFERED WEEKDAYS, 10:30am – 12pm, BY ROOTS TO WATER DANCE COLLECTIVE:

SERPENTINE RHYTHMS – Tuesdays with Mela Amaiya

Serpentine undulations meet Orisha and Dancehall-inspired movements to create this fresh Dancebrew. With heavy Cuban, Urban and African influences and deep inspiration from Belly Dance, Rumba, Dancehall, Soukous and Congolese Dance forms, this brew is sensual, fierce, reverential and playful. In this high-energy class, you will gain core strength, polyrhythmic bodily control and energetic awareness. Fresh moves will take you across the floor, preparing you for a flavorful, challenging and inspiring combination. Connection is a major throughline for this class… the connection of various cultures through movement, the relationship of our bodies with energy and Spirit, the awareness of our chakras as we move, and the connection among each of us in class and in community as we dance. And, most importantly, the connection of dance with empowerment, joy and celebration of life!

Your body is your Temple… Dance within it!!!

OPENING PATHWAYS – Wednesdays with Leslie Schickel

This contemporary dance class is an exploration of the body designed to awaken and open the body’s natural pathways and inspire heartfelt expression. Emphasis is placed on awareness of proper alignment and ease within movement. Choreography is developed that builds on foundational ideas of spinal alignment and release, weight distribution, and proper movement technique. Good for professional dancers and beginner movers alike, this class fuses concepts from contemporary, gyrotonic/gyrokinesis, axis syllabus, spinal release yoga, butoh, West African, breakdance and freestyle improvisation techniques that leave students feeling good and “in their bodies”. Leslie makes her class about understanding and enriching movement.

This class develops body awareness that informs and revolutionizes any dance style!

LEARN TO LOVE THE FLOOR – Thursdays with Armando Davila

Learn to Love the Floor is contemporary urban floor movement. It democratizes the floor-based movement & dance styles for people who are attracted to these dimensions of Bboying or Capoeira but can’t commit to the entire art form and culture. This class uses curated movements and teaches in-depth biomechanics (the how to) so the movements can be safely incorporated into your movement vocabulary. For folks who are more familiar with floor-based movement this class is a learning laboratory. For everyone it is

an hour and a half of movement love, a communal experience of creativity, and an opportunity to train hard!

SOUL VIBRATION – Fridays with Edward Galan

Dancing is not just a thing SOME people can do; it’s a birthright for EVERYONE to enjoy. It connects one to the body and helps us to listen and feel the vibrations around us. We’ll be learning and borrowing from many different styles of dance and movement, particularly those danced to Funk, Soul, and Latin music. These include Locking, the Robot, Waving, Top Rock, Salsa, Bachata and House dance. My goal is to help dancers find their own unique style and to feel comfortable dancing in a social environment whether it’s hopping into a dance circle (cypher) or dancing with a partner. Also woven into this class is an exploration of the historical and sociological context under which these musical genres and dances developed.

“The truest expression of a people are in its dances and its music. Bodies never lie” -Agnes De Mile
